I Believe the Creation Story in Genesis

"And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." Genesis 1:31

May I share my heart and theological pilgrimage with the Creation Story in Genesis?    I had always thought, even as a relatively Biblically ignorant teenager, that the theory of Evolution was intellectually untenable and rationally unbelievable.    But, for many years in younger Christian days, I could not confidently affirm the validity of the Six Day Creation account in Genesis 1 and 2.   Frankly, I had never studied it in any depth. I assumed the six days were long ages, that dinosaurs existed before man, and that the earth and the animals were created perhaps millions of years ago. I was ill equipped to defend the Biblical story of Creation, though I believed it.

Today, I am a confident Biblical Creationist. I believe in the Bible's account of a Six Day creation, each Day consisting of an evening and a morning. I believe that all life on earth was begun six thousand years ago and that dinosaurs were created on the Sixth Day with Adam.  I believe Adam was created at the beginning of the Sixth Day and that Eve, his wife, was taken from Adam's side at the end of the Sixth Day.

Why is this important?  Because if we do not believe that Genesis 1 and 2 are literally true, you and I will have no philosophical foundation or rational basis to affirm that John 3:16 is true.  As one old sage quipped, "You cannot say that the Bible is inspired in spots, and that you are inspired to pick the spots!"   The issue of the integrity of the Bible and the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is at stake in the issue of Creation.    The Bible calls Jesus the Last Adam (I Corinthians 15:22, 45).  If the first Adam is a myth, or the book that affirms his creation is in error, how can we confidently believe that the Last Adam, Jesus Christ, is Who He said He was and accomplished our salvation on the Cross?   If Genesis is not true, then salvation in Jesus is put into question.  Hallelujah, all the Bible is true, the Creation Story and the Redemption Story of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Two Biblical facts were instrumental in providing the confidence now in my soul about the integrity of the book of Genesis. First, I studied the genealogies of Scripture and took them seriously.  The genealogies of the Old Testament are very clear and provide specific numbers of the years of the life of Adam (930 years) and the direct descendants of Adam all the way to Noah. This is carefully recorded in Genesis chapter five. We can trace back the actual date of Creation by the genealogies of the Bible.  When we trace the genealogies in the Bible back to Adam, the time of Adam's creation is six thousand years ago.

Secondly, I began to take seriously the account of the universal Flood of Noah's day.  The entire planet was covered with miles deep water from the heavens and out of the earth. All life was destroyed except the life which was inside Noah's Ark. Job 40:15 states that dinosaurs were created on the Sixth Day with Adam.  The fossil record, dinosaur and all others, now on earth were formed rapidly by the Flood.  The "run off" of the waters from the Flood formed geological scarring in the Earth. Evolutionists claim that this geological scarring took hundreds of millions of years.  The "run off" of the Flood waters could easily form scars in the Earth like the Grand Canyon in a relatively brief period of time.

Why do I share this testimony?  I want you to trust the Bible. It is true from cover to cover. The Bible does not and cannot err.  The Bible is true in Genesis chapters 1 - 11. The story of Jesus is true in the New Testament. You can trust ALL the Bible. The Bible will lead you to salvation and forgiveness of sins in Christ. The Bible will guide you through life. The Bible will guide you home to Heaven.
